Highlighting that efficient operation of industrial HVAC and chiller equipment depends upon optimum temperatures of refrigerant and lubricating oil, this paper states that negative temperature coefficient (NTC) thermistors of various resistance values are the most common sensors used for efficient operation. It presents durability, and quick response to temperature change as the advantages of thermistor, and points housing of thermistor that could be installed into HVAC or chiller equipment would differentiate one sensor assembly from another. A brief overview of exposed and enclosed thermistors is presented in this paper, along with their construction, operation, benefits and draw backs. The paper also details how TM-950 series thermistor-based temperature sensor designed by Gems Sensors & controls would be the best solution for solving long-term reliability issues in HVAC and chiller applications.
